It's another one of those Cliff Lee comfort over money decisions, I applaud him for it. He definitely has enough money to survive, and obviously he didn't want to cause further damage to himself by stretching out his career.

Meche is just walking away completely. Very different.

Yes, but it's the same concept. Meche has made roughly $51 Million over the course of his career. Once you start talking about tens of millions of dollars, another $12M really isn't doing much more if the price is living with elongated shoulder pain. Lee, who has made around $16 Million in his career, has taken the same attitude that Gil has. Now that they have that money banked, they both had the means to settle for less if it meant a more enjoyable life style. mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2004/12/kansas-city-royals_28.html

Still is nice to see guy choose health over $$$.

Yeah, he's been really, really bad the last two seasons. He didn't deserve to pitch in the majors, and he was probably able to figure it out. On top of the health issue, it probably had a bit to do with pride. I'm sure the extra money wasn't enough for him to stomach being that bad again, so I completely understand why he did this. Plus, even the most conservative of spending and investing will have his bank account continue to grow larger. Money isn't an issue, like MxT said.
